Is it possible to epoxy a garage floor yourself?
The process of applying an epoxy coating on concrete floors is the same as painting walls. But like painting, the real trick lies in the preparation. After the calculations, color selections, and cleaning are completed, the actual application is easy.
Epoxy bonds well when it has a slightly rough, and completely clean surface. You will need to fill any cracks or holes before applying epoxy. Concrete must be more than 60 days old and unsealed for epoxy to adhere. Concrete must be at least 60 days old and not sealed to allow epoxy to adhere. If it does, water will either beads on it or the etching solutions doesn’t foam. In this case, you can remove the sealer using a chemical stripper. (If there is no peeling, you can recoat stained floors.
The floor can be stripped but this will not clean it. Grease and dirt can cause epoxy adhesion to be compromised, so cleaning and/or etching is an important step. There are many cleaners on the market. Make sure you read all ingredients before choosing which one is right for you. Chemical cleaners are available in many different forms. They can range from powerful degreasers and etchers to more gentle, but less effective organics. Renting a machine called a “floor maintainer” for $40 per day can help you cut down on the work.
You will usually find epoxy coatings in kits that contain everything you need. Once you’ve chosen the right one, consider whether you will need to purchase additional supplies. Manufacturers might suggest two coats or more of epoxy paint and topcoat. However, most standard kits only allow for one coat. Add color flakes to concrete. This will hide any imperfections. Be sure to measure how many you’ll apply them. If your garage’s foundation rises above foot level at its bottom, you may want a coating to extend a few inches up the vertical surfaces. This will make cleaning the garage much easier. You can then decide whether to add an anti-skid additive. Granules will give the finished floor a sandpaper like surface. This could be an option in areas where there is frequent rain or ice.
The timing is everything once the floor is clean and ready to be coated. You should choose a day when your concrete isn’t damp from rain or when it’s between 50 to 80 degrees. Otherwise, the epoxy paint and hardener can bubble and crack. After you have mixed the epoxy and hardener, the time it takes to dry is approximately 2 hours. Therefore, you need to plan in advance how you want to paint your garage. Waiting is the most difficult part. Each step takes between 12 and 24 hours to dry. Once the entire floor is dry, you will need to keep your car off it for at least 72 hours.
